Circa 1950 Babe Ruth Diecut Display Signed by Over Two Hundred Players Including Many Hall of Famers
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $2,350.00
In terms of visual appeal, few autographed pieces can compete with this spectacular display: a near life-size diecut photo of Babe Ruth signed by over 200 former Major League stars. Its provenance is equally impressive. This piece originates from the personal collection of Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez. In 1967 Gomez sold this piece, as well as many other items from his collection, in a well publicized auction. The original sale of this piece is documented in a newspaper article from the September 2, 1967, edition of The Hartford Times (a copy of which accompanies). According to its report, this piece (which is pictured in the article) was signed in the mid 1940s; however, based upon the names present, it was obviously an ongoing project and Gomez continued collecting names into the 1950s. The signatures of thirteen Hall of Fame players appear on this piece, as do those of many prominent players from the era including Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Bill Dickey, Early Wynn, Yogi Berra, Heinie Manush, Joe Cronin, Enos Slaughter, Al Lopez, Bob Feller, Phil Rizzuto, Larry Doby, Hal Newhouser, Eddie Lopat, Joe Gordon, Gus Zernial, Allie Reynolds, Minnie Minoso, Al Rosen, Don Larsen, Hank Bauer, Harvey Kuenn, Irv Noren, Frank Crosetti, Hoot Evers, Bill Skowron, Dizzy Trout, Johnny Pesky, Mickey Vernon, Andy Carey, Johnny Hopp, Vic Power, Gil McDougald, Walt Dropo, Eddie Waitkus, Virgil Trucks, Dale Mitchell, Johnny Sain, Mickey Owens, Mel Parnell, Willy Miranda, Ned Garver, and Jim Hegan, to name just a few. The signatures, each penned in either blue or black ink, range in grade from "1" to "10," averaging "7." The piece is extremely well made, professionally constructed with heavy-duty cardboard backing (it was obviously intended to be an impressive display piece without reference to signatures) and measures approximately 52 inches high and 25 inches wide at its furthest points. The piece has a few nail holes (obviously related to its previous display by Gomez), a number of very minor abrasions, a moderate crease in the brim of Ruth's cap, and some light soiling. In Very Good condition with an extraordinary display value. Magnificently framed and mounted to total dimensions of 35 x 61 inches. This is truly a one-of-a-kind autographed piece, personally assembled by Lefty Gomez, with a unique and documented history that can be traced directly to Gomez's parting with it in 1967, and that will be focal point of any room in which it is displayed. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000.
