1949 National League All-Star Team-Signed Baseball Including Robinson and Campanella
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,292.50
Scarce and historically significant All-Star Game baseball signed in black ink by sixteen members of the 1949 National League team including Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella. Although integration in Major League baseball had taken place two years earlier, it wasn’t until 1949 that African-Americans finally crossed the lines and took part in the annual “mid-summer classic.” Fittingly, the game took place at Ebbets Field, and included Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Don Newcombe for the National League and Larry Doby for the American League. This official National League (Frick) ball was signed at that historic game and features not only the signatures of Robinson (grading “6/7”), Campanella (“6”) and Newcombe (“6”) but thirteen additional members of the National League squad: Musial, Mize, Schoendienst, Slaughter, Hodges, Pafko, Roe, Munger, Pollet, Kazak, Branca, Waitkus, and Thomson. The vintage blue ink notation “1949 N.L. All Star Club” appears on a side panel. All of the signatures are fairly uniform in grade, averaging “6,” with the exception of Mize (“4”). The manufacturer’s stampings are light but legible. The ball is moderately toned and has been coated with a very light layer of protective shellac. In Very Good to Excellent condition. An extremely desirable team-signed ball dating to one of the most significant All-Star Games ever played. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
