Circa 1940 Babe Ruth Signed Large-Format Presentation Photograph

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,112.50

Outstanding large-format presentation photograph signed and inscribed by Babe Ruth to close friend and extremely well-known composer-pianist Peter DeRose. The sepia-toned photo, capturing Ruth in close up in Yankee pinstripes, has been boldly inscribed in black fountain pen (grading “9”): “To a grand fellow & pal – Peter DeRose – Sincerely Babe Ruth.” Ruth had prints of this photograph produced specifically for him to sign as presentation pieces for friends and important associates. As such, these rare presentation photos, when found, always bear a beautifully penned personalized inscription, often to someone particularly important to Ruth. This piece, as one can obviously see, is no exception, and was given to famed songwriter Peter DeRose (1900-53). DeRose himself was a Hall of Famer but in a different field. He was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1973. Ruth was very close friends with De Rose and Ruth's love of his music is legendary. DeRose played at many events for Ruth including his second wedding in 1929. In fact, Ruth requested that DeRose play his most popular song "Deep Purple" at each of his birthday parties over the last ten years of Babe's life. The photo (11.25 x 10 inches) displays a few tiny edge tears along the top and bottom, including a slightly larger tear along the bottom border that has been repaired. Two minor areas of discoloration are noticeable along the bottom border as well. While technically in Very Good condition, the piece presents closer to Excellent and most of the minor flaws are completely overshadowed by the quality of the inscription and signature. This is a stunning Ruth signed presentation photo, once a gift of the Babe himself, ideal for display. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
