1946 Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb Signed Checks Both Payable to the I.R.S. (2)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,700.00
Autograph collectors have long held checks in high regard due to their inherent authenticity. Offered here are two highly desirable examples signed, respectively, by the legendary “Sultan of Swat” and “Georgia Peach.” Interestingly, both date from 1946 and both are made out to the I.R.S., making this an extremely unusual, interesting, and related pair of checks by these legendary Hall of Famers. 1) Babe Ruth Personal Check. The check, dated January 14, 1946, and drawn on The Chase National Bank of New York, is made out to the “U.S. Collector of Internal Revenue” in the amount of $870.55. It is signed “GH Ruth” in black ink (grading “9”). Babe Ruth’s preprinted name appears along the left border. “Balance 1945 Income Tax” is written on the reverse (not in Ruth’s hand) in black ink. The check (8.5 x 3.75 inches) displays a center vertical fold, normal bank cancellation marks and approximately five staple holes. In Excellent condition. 2) Ty Cobb Bank Check. The check, dated April 15, 1946, and drawn on the First National Bank of Nevada, is made out to the “Collector Internal Revenue” in the amount of $5,473.83. It is signed “Tyrus R. Cobb” in blue ink (grading “8/9”). The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation marks and is in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 2 checks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
