Exceptional 1935 Babe Ruth Double-Signed Personal Check
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $5,287.50
Extraordinary double-signed Babe Ruth personal check, dated September 12, 1935, is made out to “Cash” in the amount of $50.00, and signed “G. H. Ruth” in black fountain pen on both the front and the back (each signature grading “8/9”). The entire check, which is drawn on the Chemical Bank & Trust Company of New York, has been filled out entirely in Ruth’s hand and bears his name printed along the left margin. This is one of the best Ruth checks we have seen. The check is dated just three months after he announced his retirement from baseball. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. Very few were made out to cash and signed twice, both on the front and back. This is a choice example with both signatures completely untouched by the normal bank cancellation marks and stamps. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. The check has a single very faint center crease (virtually undetectable) and is otherwise in exceptional Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
