1927 New York Yankees Signature Collection (35 signatures on 21 items)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $14,100.00
Baseball historians have long considered the 1927 New York Yankees the greatest team of all time. Collectors hold the legendary “Bronx Bombers” in equally high esteem. Offered here is an extraordinary 1927 New York Yankees autograph collection that features signature examples of nineteen of the twenty-five roster players, plus those of manager Miller Huggins, coach Art Fletcher, general manager Ed Barrow, team owner Jacob Ruppert, and team mascot “Little” Ray Kelly. Eighteen of the signatures appear on either a lined or unlined index card, while four others are represented on two multisigned sheets. (The signatures of Combs, Dugan, and Paschal are represented both on an index card and on a multisigned sheet.) The signatures of Barrow and Ruppert appear together on a Yankees team check. Index Card Signatures (18): Mark Koenig, Joe Dugan, Earl Combs, Bob Meusal, Pat Collins, Ray Morehart, Cedric Durst, Mike Gazella, Ben Paschal, Julie Wera, Benny Bengough, Waite Hoyt, Wilcy Moore, Dutch Reuther (on a government postcard), George Pipgras, Bob Shawkey, Art Fletcher (coach, cut affixed to an index card), and “Little” Ray Kelly (team mascot). All of the signatures have been penned in either blue or black ink and grade “9/10.” The index cards are in Excellent condition overall. Multisigned Sheets: 1) Unlined sheet (4.25 x 4.5 inches) bearing the vintage blue or black fountain pen signatures of Sam Jones, Earle Combs, Steve O’Neill, Wally Pipp, Walter Beall (extremely rare), Howard Shanks, Herb Pennock, and A. A. Woods (trainer). 2) Unlined sheet (4 x 4.5 inches) bearing the vintage blue or black fountain pen signatures of Miller Huggins, Whitey Witt, Elmer Duggan, Urban Shocker, Charles O’Leary, Joe Dugan, Babe Ruth (clubhouse), and Ben Paschal. The signatures all grade “9/10.” Each sheet displays fold lines (touching upon signatures) as well a few small areas of light discoloration and edge tears. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Check: Official “The American League Base Ball Club” check, dated November 9, 1925, signed in black fountain pen by Jacob Ruppert (“9/10”) and countersigned by Ed Barrow (“8”). The check is made out to the “New York Telephone Company” in the amount of $108.18 and remains in Excellent condition overall (with normal bank cancellations, a vertical fold, and a tiny area of discoloration in the lower right corner that touches upon the Ruppert signature). The six 1927 New York Yankees signatures not included in this near-complete collection are those of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Johnny Grabowski, Ira Thomas, and Joe Giard. (The encapsulated signatures of Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, and extreme rarity Joe Giard that appear as individual lots in this auction are from this same extraordinary collection.) Assembled by an advanced collector over a period of many years, this collection represents a unique opportunity to acquire a near-complete set of 1927 New York Yankees signatures. Total: 21 items (18 index cards, two sheets, and a check). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $14,100.00
