Collection of four handwritten letters/poems from Henry Chadwick to his wife:
One-page handwritten letter, dated June 27, 1857 (on the reverse), in which Chadwick expresses how much he misses his wife. It is signed "Henry" in black fountain pen. On the other side of the sheet, Chadwick has written a poem to his wife titled "Loneliness - To Jeannie." The poem is also signed "Henry" in black fountain pen. Both the text and signatures grade "9/10." The unlined sheet (8 x10 inches) has mailing folds and a few small imperfections, and is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition.
One-page note, written on a lined sheet of paper, upon which Chadwick has affixed a newspaper clipping of a Valentine's Day poem. Below the poem, Chadwick has inscribed the sheet "From Henry - Feb 14, 1878 - After thirty years of happily married life." The inscription has been penned in black fountain pen and grades "10." The sheet (7 x 6.5 inches) displays horizontal and vertical mailing folds, with a few small tears. An additional tear affects the left border. In Good condition.
Small note card, displaying a floral pattern, inscribed by Chadwick in blue ink. The note, dated July 24, 1889, was written on the occasion of his wife's birthday and reads "My beloved wife, The joy of my life, My dear old sweetheart Jennie, A birthday kiss, I send with this, From me your dear old, Henry." The signature displays very slight bleeding and grades "8." The note card (6 x 4.25 inches) has a few minor imperfections including surface paper loss on the blank reverse from having once been glued to an album page and carefully removed. In Good condition.
One-page handwritten poem titled "To My Darling Wife." The poem, penned in black fountain pen, was written on the occasion of Valentine's Day and is dated February 14, 1897. It is signed "Henry". Both the text and signature grade "10." The poem is also inscribed by Chadwick along the reverse in blue pencil: "For Mrs. Henry Chadwick, my darling wife, Feb 14th 1897 Valentine's Day" ("7"). The lined sheet (7.25 x 12 inches) has normal mailing folds and is in Excellent condition. Included with the letters/poems are two postcards addressed to Mrs. Chadwick (from friends of hers), one of which is postmarked 1907 (the other postmark is illegible). Total: 6 items (4 letters/poems and 2 postcards). LOA from James Spence/JSA.
