1968 Topps 3-D Jim Maloney - Rare "No Dugout" Variation

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,175.00

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely rare example of Jim Maloney's "no dugout" variation card from the 1968 Topps 3-D set. This card was produced with and without a dugout in the background. Almost all examples known have the dugout in the background. This card, with its significant and fairly dramatic though virtually unknown variation, is one of just several known examples of Jim Maloney which do not have the dugout in the background. The card appears Ex-Mt at a glance but has been appropriately downgraded to VG-EX due to two lines of surface scratching near the bottom left border which are not particularly distracting and are a typical flaw associated with the cards from the set. This card long ago originated from someone who was involved in some manner with the production of the set at Xograph, the Texas-based company that worked with Topps to produce this test issue. We believe that all of the unique and near-unique 1968 Topps 3D rarities known, including the square-cornered Brooks Robinson card, are related to this find. The 1968 Topps 3-D set has always been highly revered by serious collectors, both for its extreme rarity, as well as for its very striking and unique design. This is a very rare and unusual variation card from this highly prized 1960s Topps test issue. Because of their rarity, the variation cards in this set have yet to be formally documented in price guides and checklists, thus there is no formal consensus on the value of this variation card. We are confident the auction process will provide clarity. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175.00
