1887 N172 Old Judge Mike "King" Kelly - Boston Portrait
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,287.50
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Exceptional high-grade example of this particularly rare portrait pose of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly with "Boston" on jersey, identified as "$10,000 Kelly." All Old Judge portrait cards are very distinctive and highly prized by collectors, especially those few featuring Hall of Famers. This portrait pose, featuring Mike "King" Kelly with Boston, is one of the most desirable cards in the Old Judge set. Kelly earned this nickname when he was sold from Boston to Chicago following the 1887 season for this then unheard-of sum. This card was issued very shortly after his historic sale to Boston and features a majestic portrait of Kelly. The card is perfectly clean, both front and back, with square corners, excellent contrast and clarity. The very slight tilt to the image and a small and extremely insignificant hint of a stain on the reverse keeps this gem from receiving a higher grade. This is an outstanding example of one of Mike "King" Kelly's most impressive cards, and one of the most desirable of all Hall of Famer poses in the Old Judge set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
