1948 Leaf #98 Hal Newhouser PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,637.50
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. One of only six examples graded at this level with none graded higher. Presented is an exceptionally high-grade gem example of this short-printed "Rare Leaf" rookie card featuring Hall of Fame pitcher Hal Newhouser. The 1948 Leaf Bubble Gum card of Newhouser is the most popular and striking of all his cards. It is also a genuine rarity, being one of the forty-nine rare cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf Gum Co. set. Leafs are sometimes technically in high grade, but with serious problems related to the unusual and often inconsistent Leaf printing process. Usually it is the toning; if not the toning, it is the focus; and if not the focus, it is print dots. The offered card is exceptional in all of these respects. The clean, white borders of this card frame a virtually flawless image that is centered just a touch to the right and 40/60 top to bottom. The image of Newhouser practically jumps off the bold, bright-yellow background. All four corners are razor-sharp and virtually Mint. The reverse is clean and free of all staining or excess print, but is off-center approximately 30/70 left to right. Pack-fresh, crisp, high-grade example of Newhouser’s most classic card, worthy of the finest collection. SMR value for the assigned grade is $3,000. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
