1952 Topps Near-Complete Set (401 of 407)

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $26,437.50

Offered is a near-complete 1952 Topps set (401 of 407), including all ninety-seven high-numbers, missing only six cards (138, 148, 154, 159, 162, 180) for completion. This is an original-owner set, assembled in 1952 in Canada, where so many of the rare high-number cards were issued. We have selected twenty-five cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. The near-set spans all grades and is highlighted by a very attractive low-grade example of #311 Mickey Mantle (PSA PR-FR 1), an exceptionally strong example of #407 Mathews (PSA EX-MT 6), and numerous additional key cards. The high-number cads (#311-407) are particularly strong overall relative to the entire set (much stronger on average than the low-numbers), and include many EX and EX-MT examples. While the condition of cards in this set spans all grades, even the lower graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This is a very attractive mixed-grade set that adds up very quick in terms of value. The low-numbers (#1-310) grade as follows: 50% range from Vg-Ex to Ex, and 50% range from Pr-Fr to Vg (averaging Gd). Twenty-five of #1-80 cards have black backs (#3, 28, 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 48, 49, 51, 53, 55, 58, 61, 62, 63, 65, 68, 69, 72, 73, 74, 76, 77, 78). The high-numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 75% range from Vg-Ex to Ex (includes some EX-MT), 25% range from Fr-Gd to Vg (averaging G-Vg). Keys: #1 Pafko (PSA VG 3), 2 Runnels (Vg), 11 Rizzuto (Gd), 20 Loes RC (Vg), 22 DiMaggio (Vg), 26 Irvin (Gd), 29 Kluszewski (Pr), 33 Spahn (Vg-Ex), 36 Hodges (Pr), 37 Snider (Vg-Ex), 48 Page/error (Gd-Vg), 49 Sain/correct (Vg), 57 Lopat (Vg), 59 Roberts (Pr), 65 Slaughter (Vg-Ex), 66 Roe (Vg-Ex), 67 Reynolds (Vg-Ex), 88 Feller (Vg-Ex), 91 Schoendienst (Gd-Vg), 122 Jensen (Ex), 129 Mize (Vg), 168 Silvera (red overprint variation, Vg-Ex), 175 Martin RC (Vg-Ex), 191 Berra (Vg-Ex), 195 Minoso RC (Pr), 215 Bauer (Vg-Ex), 216 Ashburn (Vg-Ex), 227 Garagiola (Vg-Ex/Ex), 243 Doby (Gd-Vg), 246 Kell (Vg), 250 Erskine (Vg), 261 Mays (PSA VG 3), 268 Lemon (Ex), 277 Wynn (Gd), 311 Mantle (PSA PR-FR 1. Great-looking card! Bright and clean, beautifully centered, magnificent VG appearance, downgraded due to a tiny, barely detectable pin hole in the black line of the bottom border, this is a card collectors would line up around the block to buy at a reasonable level), 312 Robinson (PSA PR-FR 1, pin hole in top border, 85/15 R/L, 70/30 T/B), 313 Thomson (PSA EX 5), 314 Campanella (PSA PR-FR 1, pin hole in top border, otherwise Gd), 315 Durocher (PSA EX-MT 6), 321 Black RC (Vg-Ex), 328 High # (PSA EX 5), 330 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 333 Reese (PSA PR-FR 1, two pin holes, Vg appearance), 342 Labine RC (PSA EX-MT 6), 344 Blackwell (Vg-Ex), 347 Adcock (Vg-Ex), 350 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 351 Dark (Ex), 357 Burgess (PSA EX-MT 6), 365 Lavagetto (PSA NM 7), 369 Groat RC (Vg-Ex), 372 McDougald RC (Vg), 376 High # (PSA EX-MT 6 [MC]), 377 Dressen (PSA EX 5 [MC]), 382 Jones RC (ink line on back, otherwise Vg/Vg-Ex), 383 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 384 Crosetti (PSA EX 5), 391 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 392 Wilhelm RC (PSA EX-MT 6), 394 Herman (Vg), 396 Williams RC (Vg-Ex), 400 Dickey (PSA PR-FR 1), 403 Miller (PSA EX 5), 405 High # (PSA EX-MT 6), 406 Nuxhall RC (PSA EX 5), and 407 Mathews (PSA EX-MT 6). A quality mid-grade 1952 Topps set such as this offers an outstanding value compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a very pleasing mixed-grade near-complete set of one of baseball card collecting's premier issues, with many highlights. The SMR value for just the one NM 7, ten EX-MT 6s, and five EX 5s in this set (sixteen of the twenty-five cards we sent in to PSA for grading) is $8,445. This subtotal is just for sixteen cards and does not include the nine lower-graded PSA cards (which include #311 Mickey Mantle, #312 Robinson, #314 Campy, and #261 Mays), 303 low-number cards, and seventy-four additional high-number series cards. Total 401 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000++. SOLD FOR $26,437.50
