1887 N172 Old Judge Cap Anson - Portrait
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $6,462.50
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Extraordinary 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait example of Cap Anson. This card has incredibly bold contrast that is rarely seen on an Old Judge portrait card of Cap Anson. As can be easily seen, the portrait image really jumps out on this gem. The top of Anson's portrait usually blends into the background of the card due to the combination of fading natural to Old Judges and the lack of contrast provided by the blank background. On this incredibly bold example, Anson's portrait is so strong it contrasts sharply against the blank background. Bright, clean, and exceptionally crisp, both front and back, and with extraordinary contrast. With a loop, you can even count the dots on Anson's tie. (To put this in perspective, the photo quality on many N172 Ansons is so poor that many collectors don't even realize that Anson's tie has any dots.) Of the twenty-eight N172 Cap Anson cards (street clothes variety) graded by PSA and SGC through January 2007 (fourteen examples have been graded by each), only two grade EX (one by SGC and one by PSA), and only six grade higher (three SGC and three PSA including one qualified). This stunning example has been downgraded from an even higher grade by SGC due to the slightest hint of corner wear and a tiny black dot (possibly ink) just to the right above Anson's head. Well centered, with four square corners, and superb clarity, this is a world-class example of N172 Cap Anson, one of nineteenth-century card collecting's most desirable classics. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $6,462.50
