Collection of twenty-eight Hall of Famers and one “Black Sox” (for a total of 29 cards) from the 1940 Play Ball set, highlighted by Joe Jackson, the key card of the set. This is a fascinating collection with reference to value and quality because it represents the heart and soul of the 1940 Play Ball set, one of the most classic sets of its era, yet is relatively affordable. All twenty-nine cards are graded and encapsulated by PSA (unless otherwise noted): Two NM 7: #170 Speaker and 173 Lajoie. Four EX-MT 6: #46 Averill, 132 Mack, 133 Foxx (GAI EX-MT 6), and McGraw (MC, qualified for miscut along top border). Eleven EX 5: #41 Gehringer, 88 Ott, 102 Klein, 124 Combs, 142 Kelly, 167 Frisch, 175 Mathewson (MC, qualified for miscut along top border), 176 Manush, 180 Cochrane, 223 Jennings, and 237 Keeler. Eleven VG-EX 4: #7 Dickey (GAI VG-EX 4), 87 Hubbell, 104 Waner, 118 Hoyt, 134 Cronin, 141 Stengel, 174 Evers, 178 Carey, 225 Jackson (very attractive card with no creases, natural toning, even corner wear, and centered 75/25 left to right), 230 Faber, and 234 Chance. One VG 3: #105 Waner (SGC VG 40). The twenty-eight Hall of Famers in this collection (out of 52 in the set) represent 54% of the Hall of Famers in the entire 1940 Play Ball set. This is a very impressive and sharp-looking group, assembled with great care by a dedicated collector with an eye for quality and value, comprised of twenty-eight Hall of Famers plus Joe Jackson. The SMR value of just twenty-six graded cards (not including the two qualified cards of McGraw and Mathewson and the Vg card of Waner) is $3,095. Total 29 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
