1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cut #149 Pie Traynor
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,997.50
Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only "1 of 1" graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. Extremely rare and very recently discovered R304 Demaree Die-Cut of Hall of Famer Pie Traynor of the Pittsburgh Pirates, issued by Chicago’s Dietz Gum Company in 1934. Demaree die-cuts are among the rarest of all 1930s gum issues. Their unusual design combines black-and-white photographic player portraits with cartoon body art drawn by former Major League pitcher Al Demaree (hence the name “Demaree die-cuts”). The fragile nature of all die-cut cards and the easily broken tabs at the base of R304s that allow them to stand, make complete, high-grade examples all the rarer. This R304 Pie Traynor has survived complete, with standup tab intact. Bright and clean, both front and back, the card presents at a glance as Ex-Mt, though very close examination at the proper angle reveals a very faint surface crease across Traynor’s face, so light it's only detectable from the reverse. The card has some areas of very light age toning along the edges at the bottom. Traynor is a newly discovered R304 and is not listed in the 2006 Standard Catalog checklist. This is a magnificent example of one of the rarest of all Pie Traynor cards, from one of the rarest and most condition-sensitive of all 1930s card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
