1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cuts Hall of Famer PSA-Graded Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $3,231.25
Collection of three Hall of Famers from the 1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cut series, each graded EX 5 by PSA: #92 Al Lopez (Dodgers), #139 Rabbit Maranville (Braves), and #151 Kiki Cuyler (Cubs). Each of these cards is the only one ("1 of 1") graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. #92 Lopez and #139 Maranville are very recently discovered and are not listed in the 2006 Standard Catalog checklist. Issued by Chicago’s Dietz Gum Company in 1934, this issue of die-cuts is so rare that no full set is known to exist, and due to their extreme rarity, even the checklisting of the set is still a work in progress some seventy years after its issue. R304s' unusual design combines black-and-white photographic player portraits with cartoon body art drawn by former Major League pitcher Al Demaree. The cards are designed with tabs on the bottom, which fold back to allow players to stand. This is an exceptional group of these almost-never-seen prewar cards, which are held in the highest esteem by advanced collectors for their extreme rarity as well as for their very striking and unique design. We have seen a great deal of collector interest in R304s in recent years but have seen very few cards with tabs intact available at auction, making meaningful and accurate pricing information for cards from this set somewhat difficult to determine. This is sometimes the case when dealing with cards of such extreme rarity. Total 3 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
