1924 Diaz Cigarettes #2 Waite Hoyt
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $587.50
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Only one graded at this level with none graded higher. Only sixty-three of these cards from this set have ever been graded by SGC or PSA. Diaz Cigarette cards are among the most elusive and unusual of all tobacco issues. The cards were printed in 1924 in Havana, Cuba, for the Diaz Cigarettes brand and feature only Major League pitchers. According to the backs of the cards, which are printed in Spanish, there are 136 cards in the set. According to The Standard Catalog, only 105 different cards, however, have been discovered to date. This example of Hall of Fame pitcher Waite Hoyt is perfectly clean front and back, with square corners, and flawless picture quality and contrast. The back is bright and crisp with bold black text. The card has been downgraded by SGC due to a very light corner crease in the upper right, and otherwise has a solid Excellent appearance. This is a very attractive Hall of Famer sample card from this rare set. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $587.50
