1921-1932 Unusual Babe Ruth Card Collection Including Rare Strip Cards (6)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,232.50

Quality collection of six unusual Babe Ruth cards, spanning the years 1921 to 1932, each graded by SGC: 1) 1921 Schapira Bros. Candy: EX/NM 80. Package-design issue features crisp image of Ruth in a throwing pose, with a bat behind his right knee, neatly cut with four sharp corners. 2) 1923 W515-1: FAIR 20. Very colorful strip-card issue, neatly cut, with paper loss the size of a dime on the back responsible for the harsh grade. Looks much better than the SGC grade. Front is Ex. 3) 1923 W572: VG/EX 50. This unusual naturally dark Ruth strip card presents the same photo of Ruth holding a ball as appears in the E120 American Caramel series. Very neatly cut. The reverse has a very light stain; otherwise the card is in about Near Mint condition. 4-5) 1924 W-UNC (2 different cards): #1 black-and-white (GOOD 30, appears Vg-Ex, very sharp example for this issue) and #52 blue duotone (GOOD 30). In the "old days" we called these W590s but in more recent years we have not seen a consensus when referring to this rare set. It is listed in the Standard Catalog as "1924 W-UNC." Ruth is the only baseball player known in this set, which features a variety of subjects from different fields (athletics, cinema, history). These exotic strip-card rarities were printed in several different color varieties and with different card numbers, as is illustrated by these two examples. Tiny type at Ruth's foot reads "Babe Ruth Outfielder New York AM." 6) 1932 Bulgaria Sport #256: EX 60. Issued in Germany, this unusual real-photo card set includes 272 different subjects. Babe Ruth, who shares the card with boxing Hall of Famer Max Schmeling, is the only Major League ballplayer in the series. Appears Ex-Mt at a glance, with square corners, and perfect focus. Extremely unusual collection of Babe Ruth cards from five different issues. Total of 6 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,232.50
