1886 J. Wood Studio Cabinets - Dorgan and Esterbrook (N167 Poses)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,880.00
Collection of two rare (very likely unique) cabinet cards, produced in 1886 by noted baseball photographer Joseph Wood, picturing, respectively, Mike Dorgan and Dude Esterbrook of the New York Giants. Sophisticated card collectors will instantly recognize that the photos offered here are the very images used to produce each player’s respective tobacco card in the rare 1886 N167 Old Judge issue. It is also fascinating to note that these photos were obviously taken at the very same sitting, literally within seconds, as those which were used to produce the rare 1887 Kalamazoo Bats New York player cards of each player, with an alternate shot wearing a cap used for each player in that set. Each of the formal studio photos captures the player in uniform. The photographer’s name and address appears in print along the base of the mount (“J. Wood, Photo – 208 Bowery, N.Y.”). Both photos display emulsions that have left each with varying degrees and shades of toning. The Dorgan photo also exhibits a tiny bit of color enhancement, in either pen or ink, along the top of his head, almost certainly related to its use by the photographer for composite photographs. Included in this auction, unrelated and by chance, is a composite cabinet card photograph of the 1886 New York Giants by J. Wood Studios featuring these very portraits of Dorgan and Esterbrook among others of their teammates. The Esterbrook cabinet card displays two small corner chips while the Dorgan card displays a tiny border chip. Both cards exhibit surface paper loss on the reverse from having once been removed from an album, and appear to have been professionally cleaned. Both cards have been encapsulated by SGC and are labeled “Authentic.” Two fascinating, and very likely unique, photographic cabinet cards by Joseph Wood, one of the premier studio photographers of the era, each a direct connection to the rarest style of Kalamazoo Bats cards, and featuring the very images used to produce cards in the 1886 N167 series, the very first Old Judge baseball card set ever issued. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,880.00
