1914 T222 Fatima Individual Players Collection Including Alexander (11)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,875.00

Collection of eleven T222 Fatima player cards issued by the Leggett & Myers Tobacco Company in 1914, highlighted by a very sharp looking example of Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander's rookie card, ten of which are graded and encapsulated by SGC. Also included is one ballplayer not encapsulated, plus three T222 Fatima track & field stars, and one T222 Fatima movie star, for a total of fifteen cards. The thin photographic stock and fragile glossy surface of these unusual real-photo style cards make them especially susceptible to creasing. These individual player Fatima cards are much rarer than the T200 Fatima team cards. These cards are usually found just a few at a time and almost always in technically low grades. This collection is far better than typical of T222s in terms of condition, and is also a fairly sizable group for this issue, representing 20% of the set. We sent this entire group, which is from an old-time collection, to SGC for grading. As is often the case with T222s, cards that technically grade Good or VG, let alone VG-EX, often have an Excellent or better appearance and have been downgraded due to a very slight and insignificant crease. That is certainly the case with many cards in this exceptional and fresh group. The SGC grades are as follows: Two EX 60: Phelan and Reulbach. Three VG/EX 50: Archer, Burns, and Sweeney. Two VG 40: Lelivelt and Murphy. Three GOOD 30: Alexander (HOF, rookie, o/c left to right, still a very sharp looking card, especially for the grade), Burns, and Wingo. One card (Lapp) has a Vg-Ex appearance but has been rejected for grading by SGC due to a slight trim. The four additional T222 Fatima cards featuring three track & field athletes (Muller Ex, McGrath Vg-Ex and Baker Vg) and one actor (Wilbur Gd) are noteworthy also, and while rarely seen or even considered by collectors, are a part of the set. The advertising on the backs of the cards even refer to the set as being comprised of "famous Baseball players, American Athletic champions and Photoplay stars." This is an outstanding collection of these distinctive tobacco cards, which advanced collectors recognize are far rarer than their more widely collected tobacco card cousins, such as T205 and T206. Total 15 cards (11 baseball players, three track & field athletes, and one actor). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
