1914 B18 Blankets Ty Cobb Red Infield

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $7,637.50

Incredibly rare and stunning high-grade example of the "King" of 1914 B18 Blankets: the "Red Infield" variation of Ty Cobb, Detroit A.L. This is a newly discovered example of the key legendary B18 rarity, which we were shocked to find as the highlight of a very small collection of Tigers-related 1910-era items saved by the family of the original owner. B18s were issued with Egyptienne Straights Cigarettes. The "Red Infields" have always been revered for their extreme rarity. Most collectors have never even seen one. Only Detroit and Boston players are known to exist with Red Infields, and only a few of each at most. Ty Cobb is by far the most desirable of these great tobacco rarities. Presented is an outstanding example, bright and crisp, with extremely bold colors. The centering is exceptional for B18s (which so often have centering problems), the colors are bold, and the image is crisp. This is the "Honus Wagner" of B18 Blankets, one of fewer than a half-dozen examples known to exist, and one of the best of these few. This extreme rarity would be a worthy centerpiece to any Ty Cobb card collection, type collection, B18 collection, or collection of significant hobby rarities. On the reverse is a weak outline of darkening, which relates to its original packaging (B18s were issued folded), and a few remnants of the original tobacco packaging strip which is occasionally found on particularly well preserved B18 examples (these remnants could be removed as intended if desired). Near Mint condition. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000.
