1911 T3 Turkey Red Cabinet Card Collection (27)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,287.50
Collection of twenty-seven 1911 Turkey Red cabinet cards is comprised of twenty-three baseball T3 baseball players (including four Hall of Famers) and four T9 boxers. This is a mixed, mostly low-grade group, but includes two very respectable Vg examples and one Vg-Ex. Other tobacco cards of the era such as T206 are far easier to find in a relatively affordable low grade. This is because Turkey Reds, which were issued as premiums in exchange for coupons only by mail, are considerably rarer than most other classic 1910-era tobacco cards. Most of these cards have tremendous visual appeal despite their various condition problems. This is a very substantial, rarely offered group that is ideal for the collector who is interested in Turkey Reds but does not want to spend a fortune. Consists of: #8 Fred Clarke (HOF, Pr), 12 (Gd), 19 Addie Joss (HOF, Pr), two 24 (Vg and Gd-Vg), 26 John McGraw (HOF, Pr), 28 (Pr), 29 (Pr-Fr), 30 (Pr-Fr), two 31 (one Fr-Gd, one Gd), 41 (Pr), 42 Cy Young (HOF, Pr), 54 (boxer, two pinholes, otherwise Vg), 56 (boxer, two pinholes, otherwise Gd), 59 (boxer, Gd), 66 (boxer, two pinholes, otherwise Vg), two 77 (one Vg, one Gd-Vg with Turkey Red back), 79 (Fr-Gd), 103 (Pr-Fr), 107 (Gd-Vg), 110 (4 pinholes, otherwise Gd, Turkey Red back), 112 (Vg-Ex, Turkey Red back), 115 (Gd), 122 (Fr), and 123 (pinhole, otherwise Gd-Vg). T3s are big cards; due to their large size they tend to be more subject to corner wear and creases than smaller cards, and were also often tacked up on walls, which is why pinholes are so common with this issue. This collection represents a substantial start toward a very difficult to complete low-to-mid-grade set, with many cards having eye-appeal far superior to their technically accurate grades. Total 27 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,287.50
