1911 T3 Turkey Red PSA-Graded Hall of Famers Collection (13)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $12,925.00
Exceptionally attractive collection of thirteen different Hall of Famers from the classic T3 Turkey Red cabinet card issue (out of a total of twenty-three Hall of Famers in the set), each of which has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Because the grading of T3s by PSA is relatively new, few collectors have had the opportunity to see exactly how PSA grades these large-format full-color cabinet cards. They are brutal. T3s are big cards. There's a lot of surface area to look at, both front and back, to find minute flaws. These factors can allow extremely attractive, bright, crisp, fresh, high-grade cards, which look Ex or better at a glance, to be graded very harshly due to extremely minor technical flaws. All thirteen Hall of famers have checklist backs (unless otherwise noted): #1 Mordecai Brown (PSA did not assign a number grade and deemed it authentic, due to a possible very slight trim along the top border, Vg-Ex appearance), 16 Johnny Evers (VG 3), 18 Hughie Jennings (VG-EX 4), 23 Nap Lajoie (VG 3), 26 John McGraw (VG 3), 27 Christy Mathewson (VG 3), 35 Joe Tinker (VG 3), 36 Tris Speaker (VG-EX 4), 39 Rube Waddell (GOOD 2), 42 Cy Young (VG 3 [MK]), 78 Home Run Baker (Turkey Red back, VG-EX 4), 87 Eddie Collins (Turkey Red back, VG-EX 4), and 101 Wee Willie Keeler (GOOD 2). Turkey Red cabinets are universally recognized as among the most beautiful baseball card issues ever produced. T3s are never "going out of style" with collectors and the opportunity to acquire such a large group of different Hall of Famers is getting much rarer, especially with the popularity of collecting T3s increasing dramatically due to the recent introduction of professional grading. This collection represents a very substantial foundation toward the assembly of a complete collection of Turkey Red Hall of Famers. These cards also represent a tremendous value compared to Turkey Reds in a very slightly higher grade, or even Hall of Famers from most other 1910-era tobacco-card sets. This is an extremely substantial and attractive collection of Hall of Famers from one of card collecting's most classic sets, with far better eye-appeal than suggested by their assigned grades. Total 13 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000+. SOLD FOR $12,925.00
