Rare 1910 E98 "Old Put Cigars Back" Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,700.00

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Presented is an "Old Put 5 ct. Cigar" E98 overprint, one of card collecting's most unusual and rare sample cards. This example is particularly extraordinary as it features Honus Wagner. In addition to Wagner being one of the greatest stars of the game, of course, the legend of his relationship to tobacco gives this card a very significant additional dimension of interest. This card is, in fact, a 1910-era tobacco card of Honus Wagner. It is far rarer than the famous T206 Wagner. It may be a one-of-a-kind. The value of the "Old Put" Wagner, of course, is nowhere near the value of the famous T206, but it is a fascinating card, with a direct connection to baseball-card collecting's most famous legend. "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already issued by another manufacturer and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as their own advertising vehicle at modest cost. In this case, the overprint on this E98 Wagner advertises for "Old Put 5 ct. Cigars." E98 overprints are considerably rarer than E94 overprints, which themselves are extremely rare. The overprint on the "Old Put" Wagner is an attractive purple and really stands out. "Old Put" may not have been able to afford to put out its own set of cards, or simply chose not to do so. Since E98s have no advertising on the reverse (just a checklist, though the ACC states they were "probably issued by Briggs"), "Old Put" added its own advertising to the backs of these already printed cards. Judging by how few have survived, it can be assumed that this practice was not very successful. These cards leave collectors with an unusual quandary: Is this particular card a caramel card or tobacco card? Maybe it is both. A case could be made that this "Old Put" card of Honus Wagner is his rarest tobacco card! Different collectors might certainly have different opinions on this, but all would agree that it is a fascinating rarity. This is more than just an interesting example of one of card collecting's rarest sample cards. This is a card with a story! The card has a brilliant red background, evenly rounded corners and strong crease in the lower left corner. The card has a Vg appearance, but has been downgraded by SGC due to a unobtrusive spot of paper loss above Wagner's cap. This "Old Put" Wagner was purchased about twenty-five years ago when a group of "Old Puts" was offered for sale individually in an ad in The Trader Speaks. Our consignor immediately called to purchase the Wagner and was lucky enough to be the first to call. It has not seen the light of day since. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,700.00
