1888 Joseph Hall Cabinet Mickey Welch
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,462.50
Possibly unique original cabinet card photograph of Hall of Fame pitcher “Smiling” Mickey Welch, produced in circa 1888 by renowned baseball photographer Joseph Hall. The formal studio photo pictures Welch in uniform, as a member of the New York Giants. The reverse features a large and very elaborate advertisement for the Joseph Hall photography studio, located in Brooklyn, New York. Welch has been identified in vintage black fountain pen (not in his hand) on the front directly below his image. This card was part of a recent find of nineteenth-century baseball cabinet cards, a number of which featured the very same photos as used in the extremely rare 1888 N338-2 S.F.Hess tobacco card issue. This particular image of Welch was not used for his 1888 S. F. Hess card (a similar image was used), though the distinctive oval-style portrait design is identical to that used by S. F. Hess and the cabinet, at first glance, looks like a giant S. F. Hess card. This image appears to be unique and does not match any of Welch’s known card issues. In researching this image, however, we did find that the offered photo was included in a team-composite photograph of the New York Giants produced by Hall in 1889. Interestingly, this image of Welch is one of only four player photos found in the 1889 team composite photo that were not used in the earlier N338-2 S.F. Hess issue. (The other three player photos are of Tim Keefe, Mike Tiernan, and James O’Rourke.) The photo displays a few stray ink marks, light soiling, and a tiny area of discoloration (outside the image area). The mount (4.25 x 6.25 inches) is clipped at the corners, otherwise in Very Good condition overall. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $6,462.50
