1910 E93 Standard Caramel Complete Set SGC-Graded (30)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,812.50

Complete thirty-card set of E93 Standard Caramel cards, issued in 1910 by the Standard Caramel Co. of Lancaster, PA. One of the most popular of all caramel-card issues, this set is comprised almost exclusively of Hall of Famers and stars. The complete set of all thirty cards has been graded and encapsulated in its entirety by SGC. While not apparent except under extremely close examination, many of the cards in this set were long ago very carefully hand-cut from an uncut sheet. Over the years we have seen many E93s that are similarly cut. We have also handled two complete sets of E93s in their original uncut sheet form; in addition, during the past year a small group of partial sheets with various condition problems has surfaced. Apparently, in 1910, there was some manner in which uncut sheets entered circulation (either directly from the company, perhaps for store display, or via the printer) and the cards from many of these sheets were long-ago carefully hand cut (possibly as intended). The gentleman who consigned these cards is an old-time collector who bought them decades ago. SGC has encapsulated all thirty cards. Twenty-five of the cards have not been assigned a numerical grade due to being hand-cut. The remaining five cards are not hand-cut and have been graded as follows: SGC VG/EX 50: Fred Clarke. SGC VG 40: Frank Chance. SGC GOOD 30: Chief Bender, Jones, and Honus Wagner. The remaining twenty-five cards have been encapsulated as "Authentic." Of these twenty-five cards, eleven cards have a Vg-Ex appearance (including Brown, Chase, Cobb, Collins, Evers, Joss, McGraw, Plank, Tinker, and Young); eleven cards have a Vg appearance (including Griffith, Jennings, and Waddell), and three cards have a Good appearance (including Lajoie and Mathewson). This is an extremely attractive set which, because of the "Authentic" label status as opposed to a numerical grade on twenty-five of the thirty cards, may represent a rare and simply extraordinary value compared to what we believe the market would currently dictate these cards would sell for with numerical grades (if not hand-cut) and with an identical appearance. These cards are not trimmed. We cannot stress enough that in almost all cases the hand-cut status is extremely subtle, and in many cases it is simply not clear from visual inspection that a given card is, in fact, hand-cut at all. This is a very attractive and rarely seen complete set of E93 Standard Caramel, in a condition which makes the offering of this set a particularly interesting collecting opportunity. Total 30 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,812.50
