1909-1911 E254 Colgan's Chips Unopened Tin Including Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,527.50

The round E254 Colgan's Chips cards were issued in tins with Colgan's Mint Chips. Many tins have survived and many cards, of course, have also survived. But we have never before seen an unopened Colgan's tin including the original Colgan's Mint Chips ("The Gum That's Round") - until now! Technically the tin is not unopened, as the top of the tin can and has been opened to allow access to the contents, which are as follows: 1) an E254 Colgan's Chips card of Ty Cobb in Near Mint condition; 2) a round paper which apparently protected the gum pieces from the card, and 3) a perfect stack of round thin gum wafers, which now have the appearance of Necco candy wafers, which fill the entire container to the top, and which are surprisingly heavy. We have no way to guarantee that the Cobb is original to the tin, as it is always possible that many years ago this Cobb replaced a common player, but the condition of the Cobb suggests that it is original to the tin. This is exactly how our consignor got the tin many years ago. He picked it up at a show in the early 1990s and kept it just because he thought it was unusual and unique. We have handled more empty Colgan's tins than anyone, literally hundreds, and we can't help but note that not only is this the only one we have ever seen or heard of that includes the original contents, it is also by far the finest example of a Colgan's tin that we have ever seen. Someone must have put this complete unopened tin away in 1910 in a very safe place to allow it to be so perfectly preserved today. The tin is in Near Mint to Mint condition. The protective round paper piece is in Near Mint to Mint condition. The Colgan's Mint Chips Gum pieces inside are in Mint condition. This is as close to an unopened pack of 1910 Colgan's Chips as is possible to get. This is a fascinating and possibly unique item which shows us (as only a time machine could otherwise allow) exactly how Colgan's Chips were packaged and sold in 1910. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,527.50
