1900 T63 Generals Near-Set (20 of 25) and T89 National Types Set (25)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,112.50
Two very unusual early twentieth-century nonsport tobacco issues: 1) Circa 1900 T63 LeRoy Little Cigars “Generals” Near-Complete Set (20 of 25). Sixteen range from Vg-Ex to Ex, two Vg, two lesser grades. Missing just five cards for completion. Issued with LeRoy Little Cigars, the set is entitled "Generals.” Each card is slightly larger than a typical insert card (2 x 3-1/8 inches) and features a portrait image of a U.S. General (or naval officer or administration member) surrounded by a beautiful colorful lithograph of a battle scene or soldier-in-action image or of a scene relating to the individual's field of interest. Issued during or very shortly after the Spanish-American War (1898), the set includes Teddy Roosevelt (identified as Col. Roosevelt) and President William McKinley (who was President from 1896 until his assassination in 1901). The backs are blank. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal. A near-complete set of 20 different is an extremely significant group for this rare issue. 2) 1900 T89 Hoffman House Magnums “National Types” Complete Set (25). Extremely attractive set of these very rare and colorful nonsport tobacco cards, with condition ranging from Vg to Excellent (averaging Vg-Ex). Issued with Hoffman House Magnums Cigars, a brand of New York cigar-maker The Hilson Company, the set is entitled "National Types.” Each card features a beautiful colorful lithograph of a representative figure relating to a specific country. "Copyright 1900 By The Hilson Co." appears in the lower left of the from of each card; a card number (#1-25) appears in the lower right. The back of each card features the words and music to the national song or hymn of the country represented on the front. This is an extremely attractive set, with outstanding eye-appeal. The Hoffman House Magnum's "National Types" are rarely seen, let alone offered as a complete set. Most tobacco insert cards were issued circa 1890 or circa 1910. Both of these sets are among the very few tobacco issues dating from circa 1900, issued right in the middle of the two great eras of tobacco insert cards. Each of these rare issues is instantly recognizable by tobacco-card collectors as rare, unusual, and very different in design and style to tobacco cards issued a few years later (or earlier). Two rare early twentieth-century tobacco-card issues. Total 45 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
