1928 Schoenhutt Toy Catalog Original Painting

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,880.00

Presented is an extraordinary and unique early original illustration artwork of special note to antique toy collectors as well as to art collectors. This is the original artwork used for the colorful centerfold illustration of the 1928 A. Schoenhutt Co. toy catalog, which itself is a highly regarded rarity, especially appreciated for the beauty of its centerfold as well as its significance as an advertising vehicle for the world of classic vintage toys. The A. Schoenhutt Company was one of the premier manufacturers of toys, and its products have always been favorites among advanced toy collectors worldwide. The centerfold, naturally, is the highlight of the Schoenhutt catalog, the primary advertising vehicle showcasing the company’s most popular toys. This stunning watercolor on paper features children playing with Schoenhutt’s popular Humpty Dumpty Circus Toys, with a circus populated by Schoenhutt animal toys in the background. Founded in 1872, A. Schoenhutt Co. introduced Humpty Dumpty Circus Toys in 1903 and produced them up until the company’s closing in 1935. Today Humpty Dumpty Circus Toys are among the most actively collected lines from this period. This work measures 17.25 x 11.5 inches and displays beautifully. The paper is deeply tanned and has some mild foxing around the borders; however, the detailed area of the painting is clear and vivid. The piece is accompanied by a copy of the original catalog featuring the work, which is beautifully double-matted and framed below the painting, with a window on the reverse allowing the cover to be viewed from the reverse as well. Toy advertising art from this era is virtually unheard of, let alone an example of such extraordinary display value, or from one of the era’s most prominent toy manufacturers. This is a gorgeous museum-caliber example of vintage toy advertising display art, featuring very significant and popular subject matter, magnificently matted and framed to total dimensions of 24 x 29.25 inches. Very Good/Excellent condition. Disclosure per section 13 of REA's terms and conditions: This lot has been consigned from the personal collection of an executive or employee of Robert Edward Auctions (or a relative of an executive or employee). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $1,880.00
