Charles Addams original artwork, signed in the lower right. Date: circa 1938. Description: Policeman warning tunnel traffic. Caption: None; however, the sign the policeman is holding reads "Watch out for Trolls fifty yards ahead." Medium: Ink and wash en grisaille. Image Area: 13 x 11.5 inches. Publication History: Unknown (a variation of this cartoon appeared in the August 27, 1938 issue of The New Yorker ). Condition: Fine. Provenance: Purchased in November 1992 from Illustration House, the world's premier auction house specializing in illustration art. A formal appraisal in writing by Frederic Taraba (necessary for the settling of the estate) accompanies and lists an appraised value for this work of $6,500. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 21 x 18.5 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,993.75
