1869 Ulysses S. Grant Signed Bank Check - Signed Three Times as President
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,762.50
Bank check, dated June 7, 1869, signed three times by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), eighteenth President of the United States. The check, made out to “Mrs. U. S. Grant” (in Grant’s hand) in the amount of $400, is drawn on the First National Bank of Washington, D.C., and is signed by “U. S. Grant” along the base. The third example of Grant’s signature appears as a frank on the two-cent U.S. Internal Revenue Stamp affixed in the upper right corner, where he has penned his initials and the date, “June 7, /69 U.S.G.” His wife has endorsed the reverse “Mrs. U.S. Grant” above another signature. Each of the Grant signatures has been scripted in black ink and grades “8/9.” Grant was serving his first term as President at the time this check was signed. The hero of the Civil War, Grant was plagued by numerous financial scandals within his administration. Grant himself, however, was scrupulously honest, and was never implicated. The fully canceled check (8.25 x 3 inches) displays three horizontal folds and normal bank cancellation marks which touch upon, but do not adversely affect, two of Grant’s signatures. In Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
