Dalai Lama Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,527.50
Official National League (Coleman) baseball signed in black marker by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso. The signature of the Dalai Lama graces the sweet spot and grades "10." This ball was originally obtained in March 2000 and is accompanied by an official receipt (for the $6 postage) from the Office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama. While we cannot say for certain how many baseballs have been signed by the Dalai Lama over the years, we would guess that the number is very low. It is certainly one of the most unique items we have ever seen signed by His Holiness and the first example we have ever offered. The Dalai Lama is the head of state and spiritual leader of Tibet, who today lives in exile in Dharamsala, India. He is also one of the most revered spiritual leaders of our time and in 1989 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent attempts to liberate his homeland from Chinese rule. In accepting the award he stated, "The prize reaffirms our conviction that with truth, courage and determination as our weapons, Tibet will be liberated. Our struggle must remain nonviolent and free of hatred." This signed baseball is a particularly extraordinary example as it is accompanied by the Office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama Official Receipt from India, dated March 14, 2000, which is ideal for display with the ball, and is also accompanied by a letter from the gentleman who is listed as the recipient on the shipping receipt. The ball is in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,527.50
