1980 Ted Kennedy "Teddy" Bear
Starting Bid - $50.00, Sold For - $235.00
It has been said that politics makes strange bedfellows. That has perhaps never been more true than with this unusual and rare campaign collectible: a perfect example of the 1980 Ted Kennedy "Teddy" Bear doll manufactured by California Stuffed Toys. The doll is a classic "teddy bear" in all regards with the exception of the face, which displays a comical rubber likeness of Kennedy. In the storied field of political collectibles, few items can compare with the offered piece in terms of amusement. The use of caricature and humor in political campaigns in America has a long and rich history, and this "Teddy" Bear doll has a special place in this rich tradition. It is also a very interesting conversation piece and few people can walk by it without picking it up and offering some comment. This doll was created during Kennedy's unsuccessful campaign for the 1980 Presidential Democratic nomination against incumbent Jimmy Carter. Produced for sale as a novelty item by the toy company, it's quality is exceptional. While humorous today, its original selling price at the time was no joke: somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. Today, examples are quite rare and they are widely recognized as one of the most unusual teddy bears in the bear-collecting field (yes, there is a bear-collecting field) and one of the best of all Ted Kennedy political collectibles. The doll measures 17 inches in height (12 inches seated, which he is very good at) and is in Near Mint condition. Reserve $50. Estimate $50/$150. SOLD FOR $235.00
