Original oil on board painting by C. R. Schaare used as the cover artwork for the August 1936 issue of The Ring magazine. The painting pictures boxers James Braddock, Tony Canzoneri, Joe Louis, and Tommy Loughran receiving their ring belts from The Ring magazine editor Nat Fleischer. Signed by the artist in the lower right. C. R. Schaare, a very prominent magazine and book illustrator during the 1930s and 1940s, was also the in-house cover artist for The Ring magazine for many years. Original The Ring magazine cover artwork is very rare desirable. This is a particularly striking example. Still published today, The Ring magazine has long been the nation's number-one publication dedicated to the sport of boxing. Joe Louis was a familiar cover subject for the magazine throughout his career. This is one of thirty-one The Ring magazine cover artworks featuring the legendary "Brown Bomber." Braddock, who was the reigning heavyweight champion at the time of this painting, was recently the subject of the popular movie Cinderella Man starring Russell Crowe. Together with an original copy of the August 1936 issue of The Ring magazine featuring this painting on the cover. The painting measures 22 x 21.5 inches and has been framed to slightly larger dimensions (23.5 x 23 inches). Excellent condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,057.50
