T220 "Silver Border" Boxing Card Collection (11)
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $587.50
Collection of eleven T220 "Silver Border" boxing cards issued by Mecca Cigarettes. T220 boxers are almost always seen with plain white borders but twenty-four of the fifty cards in the set were also issued with silver borders. The "Silver Border" cards from this series are by far the more difficult to find and more desirable of the two styles of T220s. They have always been appreciated by advanced collectors both for their rarity and their distinctive style. The collection consists of the following: Beecher (Vg-Ex), Burke (Vg), Carney (Vg), Choynski (Vg), Coburn (Vg-Ex), Edwards (Vg-Ex), Erne (Vg), Gans (Vg), Jordan (slight trim along the top border, otherwise Vg-Ex), Lavigne (Vg-Ex), McAuliffe (Vg-Ex). Also included are two white bordered cards: Cross (Vg-Ex) and Goodman (Vg). Compared to baseball-card rarities of the era, these early boxing cards, which are at least as scarce as many of the most expensive baseball-card tobacco rarities, represent a particularly outstanding value, and the fact that collectors are starting to recognize this is being reflected in prices. This is an extremely attractive collection of eleven rare T220 "Silver Border" cards (plus two standard "White Border" cards) from one of the most classic tobacco-related boxing sets of the early twentieth century. Total 13 cards (eleven silver borders and two white borders for a total of thirteen cards). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $587.50
