1948 Leaf Football Collection (41)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50
Exceptionally attractive group of 1948 Leaf Football is comprised of forty-one cards, thirty of which are scarce high-number cards (#50 thru 98). Thirteen of the thirty high-numbers have the rare gray backs, which are many times rarer than the normally seen cream-colored backs. Included is a particularly scarce and very striking color variation of #16 Pihos. These are the first color football cards of the post-World War II era. Seventeen cards have been graded by PSA: two #16 Pihos RC (HOF EX 5 and GOOD 2 [very scarce "blue numbers on jersey" variation]), 26 Waterfield RC (HOF VG 3, white letters against yellow variation), 43 Nussbaumer (EX 5, maroon jersey variation), 56 (VG 3 [MK]), 57 (EX-MT 6), 60 (EX 5), 66 (GOOD 2), 69 (EX 5), 77 (EX 5), 80 (VG-EX 4), 83 (VG-EX 4), 86 (EX-MT 6), 91 Hart RC (GOOD 2 [MK]), 92 (EX 5 [MC]), 94 (GOOD 2), and 96 (GOOD 2). Ungraded (24 cards): #14 (Vg, white letters against yellow variation), 25 (Gd, white letters against yellow variation), two 32 (Ex, yellow numbers variation and Gd, green numbers variation), two 38 (both Vg-Ex, yellow and green numbers variations), 43 Nussbaumer (Vg-Ex, red jersey variation), 55 (Ex), 61 (Vg-Ex), 62 (Ex), 64 (Vg-Ex), 65 (Ex), 68 (Vg), 70 (Vg-Ex), 72 (Gd), 74 (Pr), 75 (Vg-Ex), 76 (Ex-Mt), 78 (Ex), 88 (Vg-Ex/Ex), 89 O’Connor (Vg), 90 (Ex), 93 (Fr-Gd), and 97 (Vg-Ex). Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf Football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. This is an impressive medium-grade collection of this difficult 1940s football card issue, with thirty scarce high-numbers, which could serve as the foundation for the assembly of a high-quality complete set. Total 41 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
