1909 E101 Anonymous "Set of 50" Cy Young
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50
Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only one graded at this level with just one example graded higher. This extremely rare E101 "Set of 50" candy card features the legendary Cy Young. The manufacturer of E101 is unknown. This rare caramel issue from 1909 shares a similar design with several other related candy issues (Croft's Candy, Dockman Gum, Nadja Caramels, etc.) from the same era. The offered sample card of Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young has a brilliant image set against a bright orange background, four square corners with even wear, and is centered slightly to the left. The back is also bright and clean, with bold black text. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is an exceptional example of the legendary Cy Young from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
