1920s "Executioner" Leather Football Helmet

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $6,462.50

Offered here is the rarest and most desirable football helmet in existence: a circa 1920s "Executioner" leather helmet. The helmet's colorful nickname (coined by collectors, not the manufacturer, for obvious reasons) is directly related to its defining feature: a full-frontal leather face mask that gives the wearer the appearance of a hooded executioner. This particular style helmet represents a "Holy Grail" for most football collectors due to its extreme rarity. Fewer than a dozen "Executioner" football helmets are known to exist. Over the past ten years we cannot recall seeing a single example offered at public auction. The offered example is further distinguished by its remarkable condition. The helmet is all original, with no repairs, and includes the well-preserved Lowe & Campbell manufacturer's label along the interior. All of the exterior stitching remains intact. Heavy wear is displayed throughout, including a number of exterior surface abrasions and minor cracking to the interior leather. This is an extraordinary museum-caliber item, which naturally generates a great deal of attention, and is worthy of prominent display in the most sophisticated and advanced world-class sporting or historical football collection. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+ SOLD FOR $6,462.50
