Exceptional 1961-1964 Roberto Clemente Pro Model Bat

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $6,462.50

Roberto Clemente H&B signature model "U1" bat dating to the 1961 to 1964 manufacturing period. The bat features Clemente's uniform number ("21") in faded green marker on the knob. Significant use is displayed along its entire length including ball marks, stitch marks, rack marks, and cleat marks. Factory records indicate that "U1" model bats (matching the offered bat's specifications) were shipped to Clemente throughout the four-year period 1961-1964. The first order occurred on 3/16/61, while the final order was recorded on 12/10/64. This is an exceptional Clemente bat, in all respects, and an early example as well. Currently only three Clemente bats dating from the 1950s are listed on the MEARS census and the offered bat is one of only six in the census dating to the 1961 to 1964 manufacturing period. Clemente posted batting averages of .351, .312, .320, and .339, respectively, during that four-year span, with the first and last numbers representing league highs. A great humanitarian as well as an accomplished ballplayer, Clemente died tragically in plane crash in 1972 while flying relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The following year he became the first Hispanic ballplayer elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (the Hall waived its normal five-year waiting period in his honor). Graded A8.5 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 3 points for use and another half point for the number on the knob). LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $6,462.50
