1915 New York Giants Spring Training Photo With Mathewson
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $705.00
Outstanding original first generation black-and-white display photograph captures twenty-one members of the New York Giants as they pose together during spring training in 1915. This photo, which displays outstanding clarity and contrast, is unique in that it does not picture the entire team, but only the pitchers in camp that spring, many of whom did not make the club. The two most notable players present are Christy Mathewson, perhaps the greatest pitcher of his era, and fellow Hall of Famer Rube Marquard. Also included are Jeff Tesreau (he led the Giants in wins that season), Pol Perrit, Sailor Stroud, Rube Schauer, Art Fromme and Emil Palermo. Twenty of the players are identified in white lettering in the foreground of the photo. The photograph remains attached to its period mount, which is also lettered in white and reads "1915 New York Giants - Pitchers Spring Training - Christy Mathewson Last Season For NY." While the year is correct, the statement regarding Mathewson is technically inaccurate. 1915 was Mathewson's last full season with the Giants. Matty began the 1916 season with the Giants and appeared in twelve games before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds to become their manager. The photograph (8 x 6) has flawless contrast. The cabinet-style display mount measures 12 x 9.5 inches. It is housed in what appears to be its original circa 1915 frame (13.5 x 11.5 inches). Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $705.00
