Diverse Baltimore Team-Photo Collection 1885-1922 (8)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,287.50

This rare collection of eight images, all depicting various Baltimore area teams, includes team photos of clubs from the American Association, National League, Federal League, Eastern League, and International League (including a panorama of the 1922 Baltimore Orioles). 1) 1885 Baltimore Orioles of the American Association. Fifteen team members are pictured in a formal studio pose, each wearing their distinctive striped jerseys. The photo (7.75 x 5 inches) is affixed to its original cardboard mount that features the preprinted names of each player. A "Cummins" photo credit appears on the mount. The photo and mount display a horizontal tear that resulted in the separation of the piece, since repaired on the reverse by cardboard and tape. Fair condition. 2) 1895 Baltimore Orioles of the National League. The National League pennant winners are pictured, in uniform, in a formal studio pose, including John McGraw, Hughie Jennings, Joe Kelley, Ned Hanlon, Wilbert Robinson, and Willie Keeler. The photographer's credit reads "Bachrach and Br, Baltimore, Copyright 1895" in small white lettering in the lower right. The photo (9 x 7.25 inches) is affixed to a larger cardboard mount (14 x 11 inches) which displays a few moderate abrasions. In Very Good condition. 3) Unidentified team, circa 1906. Twenty players, including Hughie Jennings (in a Brooklyn jersey) are pictured together in front of the grandstand. The majority of jerseys are lettered "Baltimore," but other teams are represented as well. The photo (8 x 6 inches) is attached to a larger cabinet-card mount, along the base of which the players are identified in ink. The date "1906" is written below the players' names. Jennings was manager of the Baltimore Orioles (Eastern League) in 1906. He was with Brooklyn in 1900, 1901, and 1903, suggesting that the 1906 date may be in error. A 4-inch horizontal tear runs horizontally through the center; otherwise in Very Good condition. 4) Unidentified team, circa 1906. Twenty-seven players, some of whom are in uniform (various teams, including "Baltimore" and "Easton" on jerseys), posing in front of a grandstand. A period pencil notation on the reverse bears the date "Friday, August 31, 1906." The photo (9.25 x 7.5 inches) is affixed to a cardboard mount that has been trimmed to nearly the dimensions of the photo. With a few small chips and border tears, otherwise Excellent. 5) 1909 Baltimore Orioles of the Eastern League. Twenty team members posing together in front of the grandstand. The photographer's credit, "Leopold '09," appears in the lower right. The photo (9.75 x 7.75 inches) is in Excellent condition, and is affixed to a heavy cardboard mount. 6) 1914 Baltimore Terrapins of the Federal League. Twenty-five team members posing together in front of the grandstand. The photographer's credit, "H. B. Leopold," appears in the lower right. This extremely rare photo (13.75 x 5.5 inches) features the identical team image as the larger 1914 Baltimore Terrapins panorama offered elsewhere in this auction. In Good condition, with numerous creases and minor edge tears. 7) 1919 Baltimore Orioles of the International League. Twenty-three team members posing together in front of the grandstand. All of the players are identified in writing on the reverse. The photo (9.75 x 7.75 inches) displays tack holes and minor border tears. In Very Good condition. 8) 1922 Baltimore Orioles of the International League. Striking panorama (20 x 10 inches) captures twenty-one team members posing shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the grandstand. The caption above reads "The Baltimore Baseball Club - Champions International League - Season 1922." The photographer's credit, "International League Photographic Studio," appears in the lower right. In Very Good condition, with a 2-inch horizontal tear in the left border, as well as a few additional small border tears. This piece is very impressive and displays beautifully. Ideal for framing. Total: 8 photographs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,287.50
