Circa 1905 Baltimore Oriole Photo Collection (87)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $12,925.00

Extraordinary collection of eighty-seven circa 1905 original "cabinet style" photographs featuring various team members of the Baltimore Orioles (Eastern League), exterior and interior shots of Orioles Park, and stadium workers. Each of the photographs (3 x 4 inches) has been affixed to a black cardboard cabinet-card mount (5 x 6 inches) and nearly all bear handwritten notations on the reverse identifying either the person or place. In many cases the date is also noted. Nearly all date from between 1903 and 1906. The historical value of the collection as a whole is extraordinary, as this collection represents a unique record of Baltimore baseball from an era in which very few images exist. Special noteworthy highlights include three photos of Hughie Jennings (two in uniform, one in street clothes), one photo of Ned Hanlon (street clothes), and one of Jack Dunn (in uniform). In total, there are fifty-six photographs of players, twenty-one photos of the stadium or a game-in-progress, nine photos of stadium workers, and one photo picturing a bedroom in which numerous baseball photos are displayed. It is especially fascinating to note that several of the display pieces in this room appear to be the very photographic display pieces which are offered as separate lots in this auction from the Al Kermisch collection, including the 1905 Baltimore team composite and the 1905 Eastern League composite. These photographs obviously originate from someone very closely associated with the Orioles team. All but three of the player photos bear the handwritten name of the player and date written on the front in white lettering. The photographs are in Excellent to Mint condition overall and the mounts average Ex. Also included is a circa 1889 cabinet card of Bart Cantz, former Baltimore AA catcher (1888-1889), in street clothes (Vg). Total: 88 items (87 photos plus one cabinet card). Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000++. SOLD FOR $12,925.00
