1909 Baltimore Orioles Opening-Day Panorama
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,645.00
This striking panorama captures the opening-day action between Baltimore and Rochester (Eastern League) in 1909 at Orioles Park in Baltimore. Taken from the perspective of the centerfield bleachers, the photo encompasses nearly the entire field and grandstands. The action pictured here is a classic moment in time as it captures the Orioles in the midst of a 6-4-3 double play. The shortstop has just tossed the ball to the second baseman, who is now in the midst of making the pivot as the runner from first bears down on him. The photographer's credit, "Hughes Co.," appears in the lower right. The white-letter caption along the base of the photo reads "Opening Game - Season 1909 - Baltimore vs. Rochester." Baltimore had been without a Major League franchise since 1903. Therefore, the Orioles, despite their minor-league status, were well supported by the city's baseball fans. That fact is firmly attested to by the capacity crowd pictured here. The manager of the Orioles in 1909 was Jack Dunn, who five years later staked his greatest claim to fame by signing a promising new pitcher from St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys: Babe Ruth. The photo (34.24 x 9.5 inches) has perfect clarity and displays a number of minor abrasions, light soiling, and wear along the border areas, including a few small chips. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,645.00
