1932 PR3 Orbit Gum Pins - Unnumbered Complete Set (60)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,112.50
This 60-player pin set, issued by Orbit Gum in circa 1932, is identical in design to the PR2 Orbit Gum pins, except they are unnumbered. Catalogued in the American Card Catalog as "PR3," the unnumbered Orbit Gum pins have always been considered slightly rarer than the numbered variety. These are one of the few quality pin sets of the era, and are very closely related to the extremely popular 1933 R305 Tattoo Orbit Gum card set, which features the very same images and stars. The set is highlighted by Jimmie Foxx, Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, and many other Hall of Famers. Each pin measures 13/16 inch in diameter and features a player portrait lithograph set against a green background. As is the case with all "litho" pinbacks, the surface of these pins is very prone to chipping and wear. This set has been very carefully assembled by an advanced condition-sensitive collector with an eye for all factors. The great effort invested is obvious. The set is in Excellent to Mint condition overall (includes several pins slightly lesser). This is an outstanding high-grade set, comprised of pins that are far nicer than usually found for this condition-sensitive issue. This issue is not yet on the radar of most 1930s gum-card collectors, but would be a worthy addition to any 1930s gum card collection. Difficult to assemble and rarely offered as a set, especially this sharp. Total 60 pins. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
