Previously Unknown Circa 1930 Philadelphia Badge Company Pinbacks Rogers Hornsby & Paul Waner (2)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,937.50
One of the great things about pinbacks is that no matter how long you collect them, patience will always turn up a newly discovered, never-before-been-seen rarity. That is exactly what happened - twice! - when we looked at a small collection recently. Presented is a newly discovered pair of circa 1930 celluloid pinbacks, featuring portrait images of Hall of Famers Rogers Hornsby and Paul Waner, respectively. These are obviously part of a set, though we have never seen another example before from this series. Each has its original Philadelphia Badge Company backpaper on the reverse. They must date from between 1929 and 1932 because Hornsby is identified as a member of the Chicago Cubs, and those are the only years in which he was with that team. Hornsby is a particularly interesting subject for this pin, because several other rare pins of Hornsby were issued in 1926, and this pin has a similar, yet distinctly different portrait image. The Hornsby pin is bright and clean, with minor surface scratches, and a few pinpoint foxing marks along the perimeter; it is otherwise in Excellent condition. The Waner pin has some light foxing marks on his face and chest; it is otherwise in Excellent condition. The Philadelphia Badge Company advertising back papers are intact on the reverse of each (the paper on the reverse of Hornsby has a stain and is slightly clipped at one side). If we had found only one of these pins, especially the Hornsby, we might have thought this was a "one-pin set." This is a fascinating pair of pinback rarities, each the first we have seen. Diameter: each 1.5 inches. Total 2 pins. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,937.50
