LOT WITHDRAWN - 1964-1966 Smokey Burgess Chicago White Sox Game-Used Home Flannel Jersey
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For -
This lot has been withdrawn from the auction. Additional new research by MEARS suggests that there is a possibility that this shirt may be a minor league jersey (produced exclusively for minor league use as opposed to used in the majors and sent down to the minors.)
Circa 1964-1966 Chicago White Sox home flannel jersey worn by legendary pinch-hitter Smokey Burgess. The white pinstriped jersey is lettered "Sox" on the front and features the number "2" on the reverse. All letters and numbers are appliquéd in navy tackle twill. A "Wilson 46" label is situated in the collar. The second Wilson label, normally found on the left tail, has been removed (the outline is still visible). Despite the lack of a year designation, research indicates that the jersey style offered here was only worn during the three-year period 1964 to 1966. No player wore number "2" in 1964 and Smokey Burgess wore that number in both 1965 and 1966. Therefore, the jersey can be conclusively attributed to Burgess. Aside from the removal of the Wilson label on the tail, the jersey is completely original and displays moderate wear throughout including a few light stains on the sleeves. Smokey Burgess' fame today rests upon his amazing pinch-hitting record. In 1965 Burgess, as a member of the White Sox (perhaps in this very uniform), broke Red Lucas' career pinch-hit record of 114 on the last day of the season. He eventually retired in 1967 with a record 145 pinch hits (since broken). Graded A8.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, minus 1 point for the removal of the Wilson label and minus a half point for the light staining). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR
