LOT WITHDRAWN - 1964-1966 Chicago White Sox Game-Used Home Flannel Jersey
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For -
This lot has been withdrawn from the auction. Additional new research by MEARS suggests that there is a possibility that this shirt may be a minor league jersey (produced exclusively for minor league use as opposed to used in the majors and sent down to the minors.)
Circa 1964-1966 Chicago White Sox home flannel jersey worn by either Don Buford or Tom McGraw. The white pinstriped jersey is lettered "Sox" on the front and features the number "24" on the reverse. All letters and numbers are appliquéd in navy tackle twill. A "Wilson 46" label is situated in the collar. Located on the left front tail is a larger "Wilson 46" label. Despite the lack of a year designation, research indicates that the jersey style offered here was worn only during the three-year period 1964 to 1966. Don Buford wore number "24" in 1964, while Tom McGraw wore that number in both 1965 and 1966. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear, including the loss of one of the buttons. This garment originates from the famed Barry Halper Collection. One of Barry's goals was, whenever possible, to have every jersey in his collection signed by the respective player. With that thought in mind he had Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn sign this jersey in blue Sharpie ("9") in the collar. He did so because Wynn wore number "24" with the White Sox from 1958 through 1962. It should be noted that Barry obtained this uniform long before collectors and historians began a systematic and comprehensive study of Major League uniform styles. Thus, without the aid of any reliable reference works, he inaccurately dated the jersey to a slightly earlier period. Regardless, it remains an outstanding 1960s "style" jersey worn by the White Sox for only a brief three-year period. Graded A7 by MEARS (base grade of 10, minus 3 points for its dual player attribution). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR
