1948-1971 Vintage Major League Flannel Jersey Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $7,050.00

Vintage Major League flannel jerseys displaying no alterations, while desired by collectors today, are actually the exception rather than the rule. Unfortunately, years ago equipment managers did not look upon jerseys as future collectibles and often strove to extract as much use possible out of them. That often meant, among other things, changing numbers, patching tears, and replacing names. Finally, when their Major League use had come to an end, the jerseys were normally sent down to the minors to be used by one of the club's farm teams, where they often suffered further alterations (including the removal of the original tagging) before being discarded. Such was the life of a Major League uniform. Offered here a number of former Major League flannel jerseys that fall into the category of "well worn." The one thing they all have in common is the fact that they once resided in the Barry Halper Collection. When it came to jerseys, Barry understood their normal life cycle and never placed great emphasis on condition. However, since we realize the market has since changed for jerseys such as these, especially considering modern grading standards, we have decided to follow Branch Rickey's axiom that there must be "quality in quantity" and so offer them as one lot. Because of the nature of the jerseys in this collection, for most we will simply make note of the year, player, and team (if known), along with their MEARS grade. For those bidders desiring further details, copies of the individual MEARS letters for each jersey are available. One last note. One of Barry’s goals was, whenever possible, to have every jersey in his collection signed by the respective player. Unfortunately, at the time he was collecting there had not yet been a systematic and comprehensive study of Major League uniform styles. Thus, without the aid of any reliable reference works, while getting some 1,000 jerseys signed over the course of many years, he sometimes mistakenly had players sign jerseys they never actually wore, but which appeared to be the correct year and style for that player. Most of the jerseys here fall into that category. 1) 1948 Chuck Dressen New York Yankees home flannel jersey. This jersey was later sent down for use by the Newark Bears, at which time the "NY" on the front was replaced by an "N." Graded A4 by MEARS. 2) 1952 Boston Braves road flannel jersey (no positive player identification). Signed by Eddie Mathews in blue Sharpie (grading "9") in the collar (never worn by Mathews). Graded A4 by MEARS. 3) 1960 St. Louis Cardinals road flannel jersey (no positive player identification). Signed by Harry Walker in blue Sharpie (grading "8") in the collar. Graded A4 by MEARS. 4) Circa 1960s/early 1970s New York Giants home flannel jersey (exact year and player unknown). Signed by Johnny Mize in blue Sharpie (grading "7") in the collar (never worn by him). Graded A4 by MEARS. 5) 1963 Al Worthington Cincinnati Reds road flannel jersey. Inscribed "Good Luck Pete Rose" in black marker ("8") on the front (never worn by him). Graded A3 by MEARS. 6) 1966 St. Louis Cardinals home flannel jersey worn by Ron Davis in 1968. Graded A7.5 by MEARS. 7) 1969 Bill White St. Louis Cardinals home jersey. Signed by Bill White in blue Sharpie (grading "8/9") in the collar.
