2001 Barry Bonds Signed San Francisco Giants Game-Used Jersey Worn While Hitting His 546th Home Run

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,406.25

This San Francisco Giants home jersey dates to Barry Bonds' record-breaking 2001 season and was worn by him while hitting his 546th career home run. It has also been graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. Bonds' 546th career home run, which occurred on August 16, 2001, at Pacific Bell Park, also represented his 52nd of the season. Bonds, of course, broke Mark McGwire's single-season home run record that summer by belting an amazing 73 home runs. Home run number 546, a solo blast, came at the expense of Florida Marlins starter A. J. Burnett in the fourth inning of a game eventually won by the Giants 5-3. Bonds has attested to the jersey's "home run" provenance by inscribing it in black marker (grading "8/9") on the reverse: "Barry Bonds HR 546." The white knit jersey is lettered "Giants" across the front and features the number "25" on the reverse. All lettering and numerals are appliquéd in tricolor black-on-orange-on-gold tackle twill. A circular San Francisco Giants team patch adorns the left sleeve. A "Russell Athletic Authentic Collection" label is located on the left front tail, directly below which is a "2001 Barry Bonds Authenticated 25" label. The Jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light wear. We could not offer a Barry Bonds home run jersey without mentioning the fact that Barry Bonds personally has questioned the authenticity of all Barry Bonds bats and jerseys, all of which were marketed by his then-partner Stephen Hoskins, who sold Bonds memorabilia under the company name "Barry Bonds Authentic." We have no way to reconcile Bonds' claims with the findings of our authenticators and offer no opinion. When REA offered a Bonds uniform in April 2006 (it appeared as lot 1071), we were contacted by Bonds' agent and informed that Bonds was disputing the authenticity of the uniform, and that proof of his claim would be forthcoming. Despite our considerable efforts to follow up, no proof or documentation of any kind was ever forthcoming. It is the opinion of MEARS, who provides uniform authentication services for REA, that this is a game-used Bonds jersey from the historic 2001 season, with unique taggings that identify it as a jersey that could have only been ordered by Bonds. It is the opinion of James Spence Authentication that this jersey has been signed and notated personally by Barry Bonds. A seven-time MVP award winner, Bonds will most likely surpass Hank Aaron this summer to become baseball's all-time home run leader. Graded A10 by MEARS (base grade of 5, with 5 points added for provenance). LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
