Mickey Mantle Signed Birthday Card To His Mother

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,645.00

While much time has been spent by historians and biographers in chronicling the life and times of Mickey Mantle, little attention has been given in those written works to his role as "devoted son." Offered here is tangible evidence of Mantle's close family ties in the form of a signed birthday card to his mother. The store-bought card, published by American Greetings, is undated and has been inscribed "Happy Birthday Mom - I love you - Mickey Charles." The first part of Mantle's inscription has been penned in blue ink, but as one can plainly see his pen ran out while finishing the word "Mom." He then finished his inscription in black ink. Other than the one light word, both the inscription and signature grade "10." Barry Halper originally acquired this piece from Mickey Mantle's sister in 2000; in the accompanying copy of her letter she states that the card had been in her possession ever since the death of her mother. Mantle signed personal items such as this are quite rare and this one is further distinguished by his use of his seldom-seen middle name, "Charles." The card (12.25 x 9.5 inches, unfolded) has been mounted (by means of two strips of masking tape on the reverse) to total dimensions of 16 x 13 inches. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,645.00
