Gigantic "Babe Ruth" Bat Signed & Inscribed by Joe DiMaggio

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,643.75

We don't know why or when Louisville Slugger produced this gigantic Babe Ruth replica bat. What we do know is that it has been in Barry Halper's collection for many years and was originally displayed at his business office. After having acquired this bat, though, Barry just couldn't bear seeing such a large "sweet spot" go unsigned. Since the Babe was no longer available, he decided to call in his good friend Joe DiMaggio to "pinch hit" for the Babe. Joe, as always, had something nice to say and inscribed the bat in blue Sharpie, "Barry - A great addition of furniture for your new office. Babe was the greatest. From your friend Joe DiMaggio - 4/11/87." Both the inscription and signature grade "9" and contrast very strongly against the light background of the bat. DiMaggio's description of the bat as a piece of furniture is somewhat accurate, as the bat measures sixty-six inches in length and has a circumference of sixteen inches at its widest point. Despite its size, the bat is constructed of what appears to be a hollow wood composite and weighs only approximately ten pounds. This is an extremely interesting, and certainly unique, Joe DiMaggio signed item hailing from the famed Barry Halper Collection. Please Note: due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. From the Barry Halper Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,643.75
